Chapter 3
Poverty in schools
reduces the necessary resources for teachers and the students. Teachers are struggling to obtain the textbooks
for their students. Without the textbooks
it is very difficult for the students to study and difficult for teachers to
teach. A first year English teacher explains
that, “I’ve got five classes—42 in each! We have no textbooks yet […]” (135). Teachers are forced to teach from their own
textbooks because they do not have the ones needed for the students. Without the textbooks it discourages both the
students and the teachers because they are learning from a different learning
material that might not even be the proper material anymore. It causes frustration and overall a lack of
learning and education.
