Chapter 3



Chapter 3

Poverty in schools reduces the necessary resources for teachers and the students.  Teachers are struggling to obtain the textbooks for their students.  Without the textbooks it is very difficult for the students to study and difficult for teachers to teach.  A first year English teacher explains that, “I’ve got five classes—42 in each! We have no textbooks yet […]” (135).  Teachers are forced to teach from their own textbooks because they do not have the ones needed for the students.  Without the textbooks it discourages both the students and the teachers because they are learning from a different learning material that might not even be the proper material anymore.  It causes frustration and overall a lack of learning and education.
